Thought for the day May 12, 2008

Nobody is very happy about high energy prices.  They're making it difficult for people to make ends meet.

The price of corn went up when it was mandated that gasoline contain some ethanol, which is made from corn in the United States, but made from sugar cane in Brazil.  Things apparently were done in a more orderly fashion in Brazil, and no shortages or price jumps resulted that I've heard about.

Alternate energy sources like ethanol, solar, wind, and whatever else can work; but they're not instant solutions.  They'll come into being without disrupting our lives nearly as much if we don't try to rush things.  Unfortunately, these energy sources will only become popular when they become cheaper to use than oil.

In a way we can consider these high prices to be a blessing, as they should eventually reduce our dependence on oil by helping to develop alternatives that can take it's place.
